- Our Cottages
Set high on a leafy rise, The Clarence is one of Bishop Auckland’s most distinguished residences. With sweeping views towards Auckland Palace and surrounded by established period villas, it offers space, stature and unmistakable elegance.
Built at the height of the Edwardian era, this grand home was created for those seeking beauty, air and quiet away from the town below. More than a century later, it remains a place of refinement, where timeless architecture meets contemporary comfort.
Step through its original glazed door and into a home of soaring ceilings, oak floors, and bay windows that flood every room with natural light. The formal sitting rooms are warm and welcoming, while the kitchen, the heart of the house, is a generous, light-filled space designed for family gatherings.
Upstairs, three beautifully appointed bedrooms, each with period features and modern ensuites, offer a peaceful retreat. There is also a small bunk Room for children. Outside, the tiered garden is a wonder – terraces, lawns and hedgerows stretching out beneath the trees, unchanged for generations. Whether you’re sipping wine on the lawn or watching the town lights flicker through the branches, this is a stay steeped in grace, charm and ease. Garden furniture and barbecue complete the ambience conducive for family gatherings .
Your stay also includes a complimentary Bishop’s Key annual pass (RRP £30 per guest), unlocking seasonal access to 5 amazing attractions in Bishop Auckland. Private off-street parking is provided and for a modest additional charge, up to two dogs are most welcome.
Please note, this property is not currently wheelchair accessible.
